Horse Ulcer Case Study

4-Year Old Thoroughbred Gelding with Horse Ulcer

Horse UlcerHistory: 4-year-old TB gelding racehorse stabled at the racetrack. This horse had a history of being a “hard keeper” and suffered from mild episodes of digestive upset and horse colic. A racetrack veterinary practitioner diagnosed him with gastric horse ulcer, upon which GastroGuard was used successfully to treat the problems. With a horse ulcer this horse resumed training and remained incident free for 2 months following treatment. After the first 2 months the horse coliced again and the horse ulcer flared. The owner took the horse home for a change of environment and to avoid the costs of using GastroGuard. At home the gelding continued to be unthrifty as he demonstrated clinical signs of abdominal pain, possibly from the horse ulcer. He had to be treated medically 3 times over a 4-month period. On one of these occasions, the horse colic or the horse ulcer was so severe that the horse was hospitalized and underwent large volumes of fluid therapy.

Treatment: Horse was introduced to ReStore™ following the major abdominal crisis mentioned above.

Clinical Results: After 3 months, this horse had not suffered from digestive disturbance and had gained weight. The horse returned to training, and in 4 months no clinical signs of horse colic, digestive disturbance or digestive anxiety had occurred. Gelding has maintained his weight gain throughout the conditioning and training process (this was not accomplished before treatment).

7-Year Old Warm Blood Gelding

Horse UlcerHistory: 7-year-old Warm Blood gelding used for Dressage. Our client had just purchased this horse in the past year. The first 3 months that this horse was in his new environment, he demonstrated the clinical signs of colic 4 times. All blood profiles (CBC, FIB, Clinical Chemistries, abdominal paracentesis, rectal palpation) appeared normal. This gelding would experience gas build-up in the large colon concentrated on the right side and no impaction could be palpated. Neither the sternal nor diaphragmatic flexures could be palpated. Normal treatment with tranquilizers, non-steroidal analgesics and miner oil alleviated the clinical signs. A reduced non-structural carbohydrate feed source was recommended and complete feeds plus free choice of grass hay were added. Initially, this seamed to help. After 30 days of the new feeding program without any clinical signs of colic, the horse suffered from 2 severe bouts that responded to normal treatment. The horse was then referred to Kansas State for an endoscopic examination. Complete physical and medical work-up revealed small horse ulcer in the stomach. The size and quantity of the horse ulcer was not indicative of the horse ulcer that usually cause digestive disturbance that is this severe. This animal was treated with GastroGuard for 4 weeks as directed by the university clinicians. The gelding had to be treated for colic twice while on GastroGuard and twice more after the treatment was discontinued due to its expense.

Treatment: ReStore™ was recommended and supplementation was initiated.

Clinical Results: To date (about 3 months since being introduced), this horse had been on ReStore™ with the above diet and has not shown any clinical manifestation of colic. (This is the longest period without clinical signs of colic for this horse.)

Horse Ulcer Testimonial - Chronic Colic and Horse Ulcer

Horse UlcerHistory: 12-year-old retired Thoroughbred gelding kept in an individual stall with run and turned out to pasture for grazing. This gelding suffered from chronic colic and a horse ulcer. Gastrogard was used for extended periods of time with decent results

Treatment: Gelding was introduced to ReStore™.

Clinical Results: Improvement was noticed for the first four months, then he coliced again. Owner had difficulties getting the horse to eat the product, which resulted in him not getting the prescribed amount. She returned to using gastrogard, as it seemed to be working the best for this horse. She still continues to have difficulties keeping the horse healthy and ulcer free.
