Enteroliths

Enteroliths - New additive helps prevent enteroliths (intestinal stones), a common cause of colic that requires surgery
June 30, 2005 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Omaha, NE --- Biovance Life Sciences, Inc., located here, has announced that regular use
of its patented feed additive, ReStore™, may save many horses from the costly and often
fatal agony of enteroliths. These stones, formed in the large intestine, are the most common
cause of colic that requires surgery.
Among the causes of enteroliths, formation has been linked to lack of intestinal
motility and intestinal pH above 6.5 alkalinity. According to the Company, ReStore™
addresses both issues: It enhances the natural digestive processes of the horse and
increases intestinal motility; at the same time, it maintains intestinal pH at 6.5 or lower -- a
level that prevents the formation of enteroliths.
ReStore™, developed by veterinarians, has been clinically proven to: reduce the
risk of digestive upsets such as colic and chronic diarrhea; improve growth rates; restore
and maintain body condition; and aid in maximizing performance.
Enteroliths, though most often found in the Southwest, have been reported in Ohio,
Texas, Florida, Missouri and Minnesota; but under certain conditions, horses in all parts of
the Nation are at risk. These conditions include genetics, diet, and management. Some
breeds appear especially susceptible (Arabs and Arab crosses for example). Diets high in
alfalfa may be a contributing factor. Stalled horses that get limited exercise and are only
fed once or twice a day are at increased risk.
A 30-day study with mature horses fed a grain supplement twice a day showed that
ReStore™ can keep intestinal pH below 6.5, even in diets with 50% high quality alfalfa
hay. This study also showed ReStore™ improved large bowel fermentation efficiency over
controls with a 27% increase in the production of VFA’s (volatile fatty acids), and it
increased fiber digestibility by 18.4%.
