The product, named ReStore™ enhances feed utilization and helps maintain gastric motility important in the prevention of a number of common digestive maladies in horses.
Control of fermentation is critical. Horses, and similar plant-eating animals, depend on microbial fermentation to break down the cellulose of plants into substances that can be absorbed and utilized. This fermentation produces volatile fatty acids, microbial proteins, digestive enzymes and vitamins.
In the natural state, the grazing horse has a continuous supply of food for the bacterial action of the hindgut. However, under current husbandry practices, horses often consume a significant portion of their diet in the form of small grains eaten over a short period of time. This interrupts the natural digestive process, modifies intestinal pH fermentation, upsets the balance of bacterial populations and can depress nutrient utilization.
Controlled studies have shown that when ReStore™ is added to the diet of growing and mature horses, improvements in bacterial populations in the hindgut occur. This positively impacts fermentation efficiency and nutrient utilization. When fed to pregnant mares 21 days prior to foaling through the first 90 days of postpartum, ReStore™ positively impacted intestinal motility resulting in a reduction in bouts of colic. Treated mares also lost less weight during lactation.
