7-Year Old Warm Blood Gelding

History:  7-year-old Warm Blood gelding used for Dressage.  Our client had just purchased this horse in the past year.  The first 3 months that this horse was in his new environment, he demonstrated the clinical signs of colic 4 times.  All blood profiles (CBC, FIB, Clinical Chemistries, abdominal paracentesis, rectal palpation) appeared normal.  This gelding would experience gas build-up in the large colon concentrated on the right side and no impaction could be palpated.  Neither the sternal nor diaphragmatic flexures could be palpated.  Normal treatment with tranquilizers, non-steroidal analgesics and miner oil alleviated the clinical signs.  A reduced non-structural carbohydrate feed source was recommended and complete feeds plus free choice of grass hay were added.  Initially, this seamed to help.  After 30 days of the new feeding program without any clinical signs of colic, the horse suffered from 2 severe bouts that responded to normal treatment.  The horse was then referred to Kansas State for an endoscopic examination.  Complete physical and medical work-up revealed small ulcers in the stomach.  The size and quantity of the ulcers were not indicative of the ulcerations that usually cause digestive disturbance that is this severe.  This animal was treated with GastroGuard for 4 weeks as directed by the university clinicians.  The gelding had to be treated for colic twice while on GastroGuard and twice more after the treatment was discontinued due to its expense.

Treatment:  ReStore™ was recommended and supplementation was initiated.

Clinical Results:  To date (about 3 months since being introduced), this horse had been on ReStore™ with the above diet and has not shown any clinical manifestation of colic. (This is the longest period without clinical signs of colic for this horse.)
